Italy - Part 1 - Itinerary

Lazio, Umbria & Tuscany

Hi guys, for the first time it's me, Telchac - the travel addict, as you have heard from my love, Hojancha, at the beginning of our blog.

As I couldn't sit on my butt for more than a week or two after we got back from our Central America trip, I came up with the idea that the four days off during Easter would be a perfect moment for our next adventure.

Prerequisites: short flight, nice weather (forecast) and a lot to do/see.

And there it was, Italy. Mere 2 hours to Rome, expected temperatures around 20C and beautiful sceneries behind every corner. Last spring, we went to visit the Emilia-Romagna region with its historical gems Parma, Modena and Bologna. So this time, our choice was a road trip from Rome to Florence right through the hills of Umbria and the Chianti vineyards of Tuscany.

Hojancha, being presented with this plan, was amazing as always. She dug deep into her Pinterest and Tripadvisor accounts and came up with the best spots along our planned route. I can tell you that during those four days, we visited medieval cities and opulent gardens, climbed the top of a Duomo, drank as much wine as we could and ate as much 'pizza e pasta' as our bellies could bear.
Useful tip: Italy has a drink-drive limit of 0.5mg of blood alcohol. This means you're good to go with one glass ;)

Our trip started on a late Thursday evening close to Rome. Next morning we got up early and rode to Tivoli to admire the Villa d'Este and its gardens. Hell of a job parking somewhere close by. But it didn't matter as you get very nice views of the countryside from all around the city centre. Afterwards, we continued to Bagnoregio - one of a kind medieval town and finished the day in front of the Orvieto Cathedral lit by the setting sun. On Saturday, we discovered the hilly Montepulciano and the historic centre of Siena which is a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO. On Sunday, we strolled through the narrow streets of Greve in Chianti and tasted all the fine wines this region has to offer. On a late afternoon, Florence it was. We stayed there till Tuesday. But I really can't reveal more now :) Have a look at the map of our trip and come back in a week to check a more detailed review.
